While D1 and D2 programs tend to fill up quickly as the signing period goes on, there are still plenty of competitive opportunities available at every division level. Division 3, NAIA and Junior College coaches actively recruit through the early and late summer.

Pick up the phone—a lot

Emailing college coaches is a great first step—but it’s definitely not your last. The biggest mistake a student-athlete can make at this point in recruiting is not calling coaches. They receive hundreds of emails every week, but only a few phone calls. Be proactive and get a hold of them now.

Visit college campuses—without leaving your home!

Unofficial or official—typically, recruits should visits schools they are most interested in. However, with the NCAA encouraging D1 college coaches to cancel in-person visits until the recruiting dead period is officially lifted on June 1, 2021, it may be difficult—if not impossible—to see a campus.

If you’re on the fence about where you want to go, consider taking a virtual tour to help you understand what the campus looks like and what your experience would be like there. Check out some online resources below.

Stay in touch with college coaches

Decommitments and coaching changes happen. Really—they’re more common than you think. You want to remain on a coach’s radar if they suddenly have to fill a roster spot with little to no notice. A good first step? Follow a coach or athletic program on social media.

Consider adding a junior college to your list

Junior colleges give student-athletes a chance to strengthen their academic and athletic abilities before moving on to a four-year college. Not only are they a cost-effective option, but top JUCO programs are also considered feeder schools for D1 and D2 colleges.
